Day 9, Sunday 1st January 2012: Warriewood Beach to Avalon

A late start today due to a late night (New Year). Catch the L90 bus from town, arriving near Warriewood at 11am.  Start by walking along the road to Robert Dunn Reserve where there are views up to Mona Vale Beach and South to Turimetta Head.

It is a beautiful warm day with cool breezes blowing in off the ocean. I good day for walking although plenty of sunscreen required.

Mona Vale Beach is a large and picturesque beach with a golf course right behind. We walk along the sand, crossing over a rocky outcrop to Bongin Bongin bay (Basin Beach); much seaweed in this area.

Then walk up to the Mona Vale Headland where there are views back to Mona Vale.

From Mona Vale Head, we have to walk along the road including part of the busy Barrenjoey Road. The next beach is Bungan Beach. However, there is limited access and the way up and down is quite steep, so we skip the beach altogether and head straight along to Bungan Head. From here there are views back to Bungan beach.

More road walking from here. There is no access to the foreshore along Bungan Head (some impressive house though). Also no pavements or shops, just houses, this is suburbia Australia style. We have to navigate through various streets, some quite steep to eventually find our way through to Newport Beach.

Newport is one of the more populated and nicer of the northern beaches. The sand is finer and less red. We walk along the beach, Alex now with shoes off, toward Bilgola South Head. There is a wooded walk around the head with views up and down the coast.

We walk down from the head onto Bilgola Beach. Yet another beautiful beach.

At the far end of the beach there is a steep (very steep) set of steps up to the road with some great vantage points back towards the beach.

Also views north to Avalon and beyond.

There is a certain amount of road walking and then in to parkland, eventually down to Avalon Beach

We walk along Avalon Beach in the direction of a spectacular headland (Hole in the Wall), then along some roads before turning left and intersecting with Barrenjoey road. It is 1:30pm and we decide that is enough for one day. I think we have done around 12km today although it has been quite tiring; first because of the late night, then the beach walking and headland climbing, and finally a very warm day. The bus (L90) takes about one and a half hours to get to the city from here. Alex falls asleep on the way.

Next week should be our last day of walking, Palm beach and Barrenjoey are within sight now.
