Day 2, Sunday 30th October: Maroubra to Bondi

A grey day around the edges. Poor timing with the buses again (we will try and get this right next week), catch the 377  bus to Maroubra. This will be a relatively long walk today (estimated 15km) but easy going in comparison to last week.

This is the “beach” part of the southern walk. Between Maroubra and Bondi are the best known beaches in Sydney. We set off from Maroubra through Jack Vanny Memorial Reserve to Mistral Point. From here you get a view up the coast as far as Bondi.

From Mistral Point we head to Lurline Bay. At low tide, you can clamber across the rocks as far as Edgcliffe Avenue; and we just make it with the tide rising. The sandstone here is highly striated.

From here you need to take a slight detour, up Edgcliffe Avenue and Down Cuzco Street, exiting within sight of South Coogee. From here a very pleasant and well paved path around Honeycomb Bay to Coogee beach.

The walk North from Coogee is well trodden. The Dunningham Reserve takes you around to Gordon’s Bay, a little beach mainly given over to boats, fishing and diving.

A steep climb out of Gordon’s bay, then around the head to Clovelly. Clovelly is a narrow inlet with a small, but popular beach, at its head. The sides of the inlet are concreted, in the manner of a large sea swimming bath. It has a reef running along the bottom.

From Clovelly, head up over Burrows park and the Bowling Club around to Waverly Cemetery.  The path here is excellent with amazing cliff-op views. An scenic place to by buried. A little further on why arrive at Bronte Beach. This is a very popular beach with good sand and a large and well kept park extending back from the beach. Very well known for picnics.

Leaving Bronte (nice and sunny now), we head up a little way to Taramara, a small cup-like inlet and beach bounded by quite steep cliffs.

From Taramara, the path is busy with walkers, runners and their dogs. It is, however, a very beautiful piece of the coast line, past the cliffs, the pools and eventually Bondi beach comes in to view. We arrive at Bondi by midday when it starts to rain.
